Radical 2021 Winner Attempts a World-Record
For over 18 years, Radical Innovation has been at the forefront of uncovering visionary concepts that challenge the boundaries of hospitality. Each year, submissions reveal groundbreaking ideas that predict the future of the industry, often years before they become a reality. These projects, from student concepts to those submitted by renowned design professionals, have showcased everything from glamping to hotels in space, drone travel, and more. Among the remarkable ideas highlighted through Radical Innovation, one standout project is Seapods by Ocean Builders, the sustainable underwater living concept that won the 2021 Professional Project category. Read how Ocean Builders is currently on track to break a world record for the longest time spent living underwater.
Ocean Builders, a leading marine innovation and technology company, has initiated a project to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest continuous stay in an underwater room. This mission showcases how technology and sustainable design can facilitate long-term underwater habitation. During the challenge, Rüdiger Koch, an aerospace engineer, Co-Founder, and lead engineer at Ocean Builders, will reside 11 meters below the surface in the SeaPod, an innovative floating home designed specifically for living on the water.
Currently designed as a unique home, the SeaPod combines above-water and underwater spaces, offering an immersive experience with 360° panoramic windows. Its innovative design features a marine-grade steel frame, which is protected from rust by a proprietary electrical system. This system works by attracting calcium carbonate from the ocean to adhere to the exterior of the structure, forming a protective layer. Not only does this shield prevent rust, but it also creates a nutrient-rich environment that supports coral growth and other marine life, enhancing the surrounding ecosystem.
Designed to be energy and water-independent, the SeaPod is the result of seven years of research and development and took 18 months to construct. The innovative roof design serves multiple purposes: it captures rainwater for household use, and with 36 high-efficiency solar panels, it harnesses solar energy to power the home. The underwater habitat is equipped with essential amenities, including high-speed internet, a full-size bed, and a custom lighting system to simulate daylight. Supplies will be delivered from Linton Bay Marina, which is located 2.6 km away.
“SeaPods offer a sustainable and innovative way of living on the water, opening new possibilities for how we engage with our planet,” said Rüdiger Koch, Lead Engineer and co-founder of Ocean Builders. “By providing an immersive experience with marine life, the SeaPod creates a deeper connection to the ocean, fostering a greater appreciation and understanding of its importance. We hope this unique perspective inspires a lasting commitment to protecting the ocean’s health, which is crucial for the future of our planet.”
Setting New Standards for Ocean Living
Ocean Builders is not only aiming to break the record but also to inspire the next generation of sustainable oceanic habitats. "This project represents a unique opportunity for Ocean Builders to establish itself as a pioneer in the creation of sustainable marine homes," said Grant Romundt, CEO and co-founder of Ocean Builders. "This is just the first step towards a future where humans can live in harmony with the ocean, promoting a balance between innovation and environmental stewardship.
